Go Africa Ignites Islington’s Black Cultural Centre with Culture, Community, and Creativity

Islington, 8 August 2025 — Stepping into the heart of the borough’s newest cultural hub, Go Africa took a three month residency at the Black Cultural Centre in Islington from June through to August, ushering in a season of African heritage, creative expression, and community empowerment.

Under its three-month tenure running until mid-August, Go Africa hosted a range of community events including:

  • Business workshops and mentorship hubs: Practical sessions designed to nurture aspiring African and Caribbean entrepreneurs and market traders
  • Weekly health hubs: Featuring culturally competent healthcare support in collaboration with Islington Council’s Public Health team, offering a dedicated space to address disparities in Black communities
  • Creative workshops and cultural talks: Opportunities to explore culture through arts, crafts, exhibitions, and family-friendly activities

Anna Njie, Director of Go Africa, shared her vision: “We look forward to driving positive change across the African-Caribbean community … building a more prosperous and connected local community through our health and creative programmes.”

This creative and civic initiative marked Go Africa’s residency as the third residency of the Black Cultural Centre, following impactful programming by Black History Studies and Carib Eats, each contributing fresh perspectives—from educational cinema to mouth-watering community canteens.

Go Africa’s residency has amplified cultural identity and fostered transformative community engagement through:

  • Holistic programmes blending creativity, health, and entrepreneurship.
  • A celebration of African and Caribbean heritage that supports local voices.
  • A blueprint for inclusive cultural programming aligned with Islington’s broader equality goals
